Relationships are essential to our well-being. One of the basic human needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is Love/Belonging. In other words, one of the most basic needseach human has in order to survive is having relationships with others. The Beatles probably said it best: “I’ll get by with a little help from my friends.” Each one of us has likely had times when we’ve leaned on our friends and family, or even on strangers, or we’ve been strong and supportive of another when they needed us. This is a beautiful example of the incredibly powerful exchange of relationship currency.
Trading in relationships is very diverse. It can be as simple as showing up or as complex as being in a marriage, partnership, or family. Being silly so your baby smiles is trading relationship currency on both parts. Helping a friend with their garden in exchange for vegetables later on is relationship currency plus time for $tuff.
